Barry Clearwater, Consulting Engineer, will speak on aviation fuel filter water separator internal fires and explosions: real or apocryphal? Aviation fuel management is Barry’s main area of expertise.
Hannah Prouse, a forensic engineering technician and dogman specialising in mobile cranes, EWPS and lifting equipment, will introduce the engineering principles that inform proper dogging technique, followed by three quickfire case studies:
1. Use of incorrect equipment – 2010 fatality, SA
2. Not establishing effective communication with operator – 2017 incident, NSW
3. Not maintaining vertical hoist rope – 2019 incident, NSW
Hannah provides expert opinion to government and both plaintiff and defendant solicitors in matters relating to crane, rigging and Elevated Working Platform incidents.
David Eager will speak on the failure of an auto-belay device within an indoor climbing facility - an incident where an 8-year-old girl fell 7 m from a rope ladder within an artificial climbing facility on 30 July 2022. The facility operator was charged and pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (VIC).
David is Professor of Risk Management and Injury Prevention at UTS and an internationally recognised expert on the safety aspects of trampolines, playgrounds, play surfacing, sports and recreation equipment, and amusement rides and devices. His contribution to the profession of mechanical engineering was recognised when he was awarded the AGM Michell Medal by the Mechanical College of The Institution of Engineers Australia.
Mark Dohrmann AM will speak on Liability – the issue beyond causation that lawyers need our advice on, using a standard footpath fall as an example of ambiguous responsibility.
Mark is an engineer and ergonomist who has given expert evidence and liability reports in over 100 cases a year for 45 years.
